How to Take a Proper Soil Sample

  • Take many sub-samples. Ten to twenty small scoops in a W or zig-zag pattern per block, mixed into one composite.

  • Air-dry in the shade. Never dry soil in direct sun or over heat.
  • Label clearly and tell the lab your intended crop so the recommendation fits.

How to Read Your Soil Test Results

  2. Choose your basal fertiliser (planting) to fill the biggest nutrient gap — often phosphorus, so DAP or an NPK blend.
